Retool's New Look 2024: UI Rebrand, Dark Mode & What Changed

On September 12, 2024, Retool launched its new look — a full visual rebrand that touched everything from the public-facing marketing site to the community.retool.com forum. If you logged in and felt like something was different, you weren't imagining it. The updated UI brings a refreshed color palette, new typography, and a redesigned logo, all aimed at pushing Retool's brand identity into its next chapter. This post breaks down exactly what changed, how to customize your community experience, and which early bugs were reported and fixed.

What Changed in Retool's 2024 UI Rebrand

The rebrand was spearheaded by Justin, Retool's Head of Brand Design, and rolled out simultaneously across Retool's marketing properties and the community forum. The core visual changes include:

  • A new brand color palette applied across light and dark themes
  • Updated typography with a new font system
  • A refreshed Retool logo
  • A redesigned community forum frontend at community.retool.com

The community-side implementation was led by team members @jdreeves, @Paulo, @Tess, and @AbbeyHernandez, who handled the final mile of getting the new brand applied to the forum. The result is a cleaner, more cohesive experience that aligns the community with Retool's broader product direction.

How to Switch Between Light and Dark Mode in the Retool Community

The updated community forum ships with two theme options built around the new brand — Light (the default) and Dark. Switching between them takes about ten seconds:

  • Go to the top-right corner of the forum and click your profile icon
  • Select Preferences from the dropdown
  • Click the Interface tab
  • Toggle between Light and Dark to set your preferred theme

Both themes use the new brand color palette, so whichever you choose, you're seeing the updated Retool visual identity. Dark mode in particular is worth checking out if you spend long sessions in the community — it's easy on the eyes and still renders the new design system cleanly.

Early Bugs Reported After the Retool UI Launch

Any large frontend rollout comes with some rough edges. The community was quick to surface a few issues right after launch, and the Retool team responded fast. Here's what was flagged and what happened:

Anchor Link Scroll Offset Bug

Shortly after launch, community member @khill-fbmc noticed that clicking a heading anchor link (#) caused the page to scroll slightly too far, hiding the heading underneath the fixed navbar. This is a classic scroll offset bug that shows up when a sticky header isn't accounted for in anchor scroll behavior. The team acknowledged it and flagged it for investigation.

Dark Mode Missing Logo

Also spotted by @khill-fbmc: when switching to Dark mode immediately after launch, the Retool logo wasn't rendering — it was simply missing. This was likely a missing dark-mode asset in the theme configuration. Community lead @Paulo confirmed the report, and the fix was deployed quickly. If you check dark mode now, the logo is back where it belongs.

Retool University Login: Enter Key Not Submitting the Invite Form

A separate issue was flagged on the Retool University login page: typing an email address into the invite input and pressing Enter was not submitting the form — instead, it was clearing the input entirely. Clicking the button manually did trigger the invite, but the success notification was returning the raw string send_invite instead of a human-readable message. In at least one case, the invite errored out for a coworker.

Team member @Chris_Riley created a ticket and shipped a fix that:

  • Enables form submission via the Enter key
  • Disables both the button and the key handler while the backend workflow is running (preventing double-submits)

If you ran into this issue during the launch window, it's resolved. Test it by entering an email and hitting Enter — it should now submit correctly.

Why This Rebrand Matters for Retool Builders

A UI refresh might feel like a cosmetic update, but for teams building internal tools on Retool, it signals something more significant: Retool is investing heavily in its platform identity and long-term positioning. A stronger brand typically means more enterprise adoption, which in turn drives more investment in the product itself — better components, more integrations, and a more active community.

If you're using Retool to build internal tools for clients or your own team, a more polished community forum also means it's easier to find answers, share implementations, and get support. The Retool community forum is one of the most underrated resources for solving edge cases quickly — and now it looks the part.

How to Give Feedback on the New Retool UI

If you spot something off with the new frontend, the Retool team wants to hear about it. You can submit feedback in two places:

  • Feature Requests — for things you'd like to see changed or improved
  • Discussion — for general observations or questions about the new design

The team has already shown they're responsive: bugs flagged within hours of launch were triaged and fixed within days. That's a good sign for anyone who relies on the community as part of their Retool workflow.

The Retool new look 2024 is live, the major launch bugs are patched, and the community forum is running the updated brand end-to-end. Switch your theme, bookmark the forum, and keep building.
